How can I make my recently adopted German Shepherd and Maltese get along?
I am about to adopt a 4 year old fully trained German Shepherd. I also have a 6 year old Maltese at home and was wondering if anyone knows of any useful tips or tricks on how to make both dogs get along as quickly and happily as possible.

In the UK do you have to contact your local police to train a German Shepherd to protect you?
Im getting a German Shepherd I heard this from someone that you have to contact your local police to train a German Shepherd to be defensive/protective, or are you able to just do tht anyway at normal dog training classes?

How can I get my German Shepherds to come to me when I call them?
My first Shepherd is very well behaved and listens all the time. My second, a white female, refuses to come when I call her and is very hard to catch when she gets out of the yard. What is the best way to train German Shepherds, they are very loving and intelligent, but the female is very stubborn.

She shouldn’t be able to get OUT of the yard, except into your house.
My first requirement of puppy seekers is that they have a door opening into a yard that is fenced to not just keep their pet home but to also keep stray dogs & stray brats OUT.
About 4th on my list of requirements is that they attend a proper training club’s weekly classes starting when pup is 18-22 weeks old.
You don’t tell us how old either pooch is.
You don’t tell us how long you have had each one.
You don’t say WHY she won’t come when called. The normal reasons are that the human is not fit to have a dog (sadistic, a bully, impatient, whatever), or the dog is too scared to like any human.
I cannot tell which applies.
So all I can do is remind you of the traditional process:
#1: Bring Pup home at 7-9 weeks old and stay home with it for at least a week, convincing it that the world is a fun safe place and you are the source of everything good in it.
#2: Familiarise it – always from a distance IT considers safe – with every movement, reflections, scent, sight, sound & texture on your property.
# 3: Once the first set of vaccines have had time to start working, encourage Pup to try to “explore in all directions at once” on the end of a 2m/6ft leash in places where dogs do NOT run free, do NOT piddle-poo-vomit. Familiarise it with everything above that isn’t on your property.
#4: Participate in weekly training club classes so that YOU get coached on how to be an effective trainer and Pup learns to pay attention regardless of what other dogs & people are doing.
So
(a) Book in to a class
and, while waiting,
(b) Work to have your bitch actually LIKE you.
Tone of voice, body language are important to a pooch – they don’t use words.
Expectation of rewards is important to a pooch. Different pooches have different preferences, but some examples to accompany or immediately follow praise are:
• Physical (pats, rubs on chest or croup or ear-bases)
• Games (ball-chase, tug-o-war, tracking)
• Tidbits (a salted peanut; a sliver of: hard cheese, baked liver, crisped bacon, baked hot dog, raw carrot; a sprig of broccoli)
◙ Add http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/The_GSD_Source to your browser’s Bookmarks or Favorites so that you can easily look up such as rescue groups, feeding, vaccinations, worming, clubs, weights, teething, neutering, disorders, genetics.
◙ To ask about GSDs, join some of the 400+ YahooGroups dedicated to various aspects of living with them. Each group’s Home page tells you which aspects they like to discuss, and how active they are. Unlike YA, they are set up so that you can have an ongoing discussion with follow-up questions for clarification. Most allow you to include photos in your messages.

Give me one good reason that German Shepherd specifically requires permission?
Does this mean not for Rottwieler, Doberman or Mastiff?
There is nothing wrong with training a dog to protect you, any dog. But be mindful you are responsible for your dog, and theres a thing called the compensation culture too!
Teaching a dog to chase and sieze is a different matter, I’m not sure of the procedure there, but security firms will have dogs that are allowed to bite if need be…that’s probably whats meant here.
Hey…see this American Police dog (GSD) get it’s man!
How do I train my puppy german shepherd to follow me?
I wanna know how i can train my german shepherd pup to follow me so when its older i can take it to the beach without it running away.
If I spend everyday all day with it looking after it Loving it all that stuff will it just follow anyway or does it need training?

Being nice is an absolutely essential first step. Your pup should regard you as the centre of its universe. It should know that you won’t call it except for something nice – praise, pats or rubs, tidbits, games such as fetch or tug-o-war, meals, to put it on-lead for an interesting walk where it can do lots of exploring at the end of the leash.
But being nice isn’t enough.
Merely following you soon gets boring.
No matter how nice is the person you like most at present, I’ll bet you don’t spend all your free time adoringly following that person. And I’ll bet that sometimes you do things that that person DOESN’T want you doing – especially when you are in an exciting place.
I require my buyers to attend training classes and send me their first graduation certificate.
The majority of your pup’s training should be done at home, a couple of minutes at a time, but being in a class is essential. It’s the only way you are going to be observed by experienced trainers and given advice that helps you improve whatever needs improving, such as your use of “the voices” and of your posture, your timing, your choices of rewards & reprimands. And it is the safest situation in which to find out whether your pet still obeys even when there are distractions. Until it does, no way should it be off-lead in any public place.
And it should NEVER be off-lead anywhere that has vehicles moving through.
[andreav4...]‘s brain needs assistance, starting with learning what our breed is called, and why. Dogs have instincts, and different breeds have been selected for particular instincts to reliably be present (until show-is-all breeders and breeders-from-pets breed those instincts out…), but training is necessary if the way they use those instincts is to properly match our requirements.

How do I train my German Shepherd to be an executive protection dog?
How do I train It myself? Where do I get a Decoy in L.A.? Could the owner be the decoy?

No, you can not be your own decoy.. if you are the trainer/handler.. then you let someone else be the helper. Find a Schutzhund Club or a Protection Club or a club that does Ring Sport. Go from there.
To start with you can go to this site and see if there are any clubs you can visit in your area.. just to see what it is all about.

This type of training you are talking about takes years of training and acquiring titles.
